Weekends Only Introduces New Non-Commission Pay System
By Monda Petrinelli
8/26/2015 6:38:00 PM

ST. LOUIS, MO (August 24, 2015) — Weekends Only Furniture and Mattress has announced a permanent break from furniture industry tradition and switched its sales staff to a non-commission pay system August 14. This conversion aligns with the Weekends Only culture of providing a unique shopping experience: one dedicated to nothing but the best interest of customers.

The Weekends Only mission is to save customers money and the sales staff has always been trained to take personal responsibility for meeting customer needs.

"By switching to non-commission, it allows customers to feel even more confident that the Weekends Only sales staff is helping them find the best solutions for their needs," said Weekends Only President Lane Hamm. "We listen and are only interested in helping customers find the furniture that meets their needs. Nothing more, nothing less."

The decision to switch to a non-commission system has been in development for three years. The change was supported by customer research that consistently showed customers like a friendly and low-pressure sales approach.

The non-commission system was tested for the past year at the company’s Fairview Heights, Ill. location. The store noticed an immediate change in customer interactions once customers were informed that the sales staff had one objective with each recommendation in mind: ensuring the satisfaction of the shopper.

Director of Human Resources John Wennemann said the non-commission system also creates a better working environment for employees. Using sales data, the company created a formula to calculate hourly wages to ensure, over the long haul, employees would be earning comparable income under the new system. The response from managers and sales staff has been consistently positive.

Pay starts at $11.50 per hour for a Home Furnishings Assistant. Based on their ability to match furniture with the customer’s needs, the employee can be promoted to Home Furnishings Advisor and, subsequently, Home Furnishings Consultant where pay can reach as high as $24 per hour.

"We provide a living wage, with the opportunity to grow your pay based on performance, and a predictable income without a conflict of interest in selling," Wennemann said. "It’s better for our customers and our employees."

Hamm added: "By committing to a living wage, rather than a commission that can vary from week to week, our sales associates have a more reliable income all through the year. This improves stability for households, allows for better planning and reduces anxiety for employees who are the primary breadwinners for their families."

Weekends Only believes happy employees can better serve happy customers.

"My vision is that Weekends Only serves as an agent for human happiness – for our associates, our customers and the community," adds Weekends Only CEO Tom Phillips. "I believe that engaged associates create engaged customers. Our unique culture is helping us create a sustainable organization of value, an enduring corporation that makes the world a better place."

Weekends Only has five locations in the St. Louis area and recently opened its first location in Indianapolis.  The retailer is currently hiring in both St. Louis and Indiana.

From Shopper to Employee: Monda's Story
By Monda Petrinelli

Monda's Story of Transforming from a Weekends Only Shopper to a Weekends Only Employee

I was a long-time Weekends Only shopper, even before I bought any furniture. I loved the openness of the store. It felt friendly, and I liked the no-pressure sales environment. My husband and I would stop by often after a movie to check out what was new in the store. On one of these visits, we found a huge, super comfy sectional at a crazy good price—and it was the last one in the store! We knew if we didn't grab it then, it would probably be gone the next time we came in. We bought the sectional, and it was delivered to our house the very next day with a new storage ottoman. Since then, we have loved snuggling up on our favorite sectional every weekend to catch up on our favorite TV shows. Even our dog Fergie loves it!

A year or so later, a recruiter called me out of the blue looking for a new Senior Marketing Manager at Weekends Only. I had just finished reading what is now one of my favorite books: Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos. In the book, Hsieh describes how important and transformative it is for a business to choose and live by a set of core values. When I researched Weekends Only, I found they had a set of core values and a mission statement that drove their business. It was fate! I knew in my gut this was going to be my new job.

I just celebrated my 3-year anniversary with Weekends Only, and I love it more now than when I started. It's the perfect place for me to grow personally and professionally. There's a company-wide focus on mentoring and development. The people here are nice, and we all operate as a real team. The core values are real, too—they are not just a set of words on a wall. (Although you can see them on the wall as soon as you walk into the corporate office!) We actually live and align our business by them, and I'm proud to be part of a company and a culture that makes that a priority.

Weekends Only holds to the core values of Responsibility, Teamwork, Performance, Growth, Honesty, and Commitment. Learn more about the Weekends Only Mission, Values, and Culture.

Weekends Only is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values diversity in our employees. Learn more about and apply for Careers & Jobs with Weekends Only.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 15, 2015) – The savings are on. Weekends Only Furniture and Mattress officially opened the doors of it first Indiana location this morning and welcomed Indy shoppers to experience a new way to buy furniture.

“This great city has all the right ingredients for us to be successful. The best part is the people of Indianapolis. You're our kind of people,” said CEO Tom Phillips prior to cutting the ribbon. “You never know what you're going to find at a Weekends Only store, but what you do know, is you'll find it at the best price. We love our customers. We are looking for people who want to grow with us, personally and professionally. We will dedicate ourselves to earning your trust and keeping it. We want Indy to be our town, too.”

Phillips also revealed that he is looking to open a second Weekends Only location in Indy next year.

Joining Phillips in officially opening the store was State Senator James Merritt (R-Indianapolis).

We hope Weekends Only is going to be here for a long time,” he said. “It seems like it's a friendly, homey type of company, and thus exactly what Castleton and Indianapolis needs.”

Weekends Only is located at 8315 Center Run Drive, the site of the former Burlington Coat Factory. Shoppers got a sneak peek this weekend before the grand opening on May 22.

As its name suggest, Weekends Only is only open Friday through Sunday. The limited shopping hours allow the company to pass significant savings on brand name furniture to their customers.

The concept has excelled in St. Louis. Weekends Only opened its first store in 1997 and expanded to five in less than a decade. In 2006, the company began to think about expanding to another city, but the question was where? It didn’t take long before Phillips decided Indianapolis was a good fit.

Also on hand were members of the OneZone Chamber of Commerce, who represent businesses in the Carmel and Fishers communities.

“We are so pleased to have you right on our doorstep,” said Chamber President Mo Merhoff. “The entrepreneurial spirit of a company like Weekends Only is exactly what we were looking for in central Indiana. Everyone who comes in to your door is welcome.”

Weekends Only Indy Grand Opening on Memorial Day Weekend
By Monda Petrinelli
4/13/2015 3:55:00 PM
Indianapolis Skyline

Doors Open at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 22nd, at 8315 Center Run Drive in Castleton

ST. LOUIS, MO (April 9, 2015) — The wait is finally over. Weekends Only Furniture and Mattress plans to help Indy kick off the summer in style, with hundreds of new sofas, dining room sets, bedroom sets, mattresses and accessories when it opens on Friday, May 22nd. The furniture and mattress retailer is preparing for the grand opening of its first Indianapolis store on Memorial Day Weekend. At 10:00 a.m., the doors open at 8315 Center Run Drive to offer Indy residents serious savings on top quality furniture and mattresses with extended holiday hours thru Monday, May 25th.

“When the lights come on, the savings take off,” said Tom Phillips, CEO of Weekends Only. “We work hard to bring you the best styles, selections and amazing prices this and every weekend. You’ll experience the best kind of sticker shock during our grand opening event.”

As its name suggests, Weekends Only is open Friday through Sunday and during special holidays on Monday. The limited shopping hours are just one of the key ways that allow the company to pass significant savings on to their customers.

David Gerdt of Fishers, Indiana, has been named General Manager In Training of the new Indianapolis store. Gerdt, comes from Gerdt Furniture, a long-standing Indianapolis family-owned furniture business. He worked his way through the business holding such positions as Operations Manager, Sales Manager and Advertising Manager. Gerdt Furniture closed in 2013 when his father retired.

Gerdt is excited about the new concept coming to Indianapolis, and he is looking forward to providing customers with a great experience.

“Weekends Only is different because you can get what you want when you want it. If you buy online, you can pick up at the store, or have it delivered within days,” he said.

The Weekends Only concept has excelled in St. Louis. Phillips opened his first store in 1997 and expanded to five in less than a decade. When the company began to think about expanding to another city, the question was where? After exploring many locations, Phillips decided Indianapolis was the perfect fit.

“We just fell in love with the city,” Phillips said. “It has similar Midwest values, a stable, growing economy and great people. It's also a convenient 4-hour drive from St. Louis, where we are headquartered. We can easily make the commute in a day and the distance also allows us to deliver out of our St. Louis distribution center.”

With the opening less than two months away, there is no time to rest.

Apply Today at Weekends Only – Hiring Is Underway with 40 Positions to Fill

“We are currently hiring and training begins in April,” said John Wennemann, Director of Human Resources. “We have a temporary hiring office in the shopping center next to the store. We will be attending job fairs before and after the Grand Opening. We currently have about 40 openings for sales, customer service and operations to start in April and early May. The new store will bring more than 60 full- and part-time jobs to the area.”

Interested candidates can apply online and are welcome to visit the hiring office, 8255 Center Run Dr., in person. And, of course, must be able to work weekends.

Adjusting to Daylight Savings
By Monda Petrinelli
3/5/2015 1:52:00 PM

Tips and advice for when you lose an hour of sleep from Daylight Savings

We are all pretty familiar with the 2 annual Daylight Savings adjustments.  In spring, we “Spring Forward” an hour, in fall we “Fall Back.”  The fall adjustment is my personal favorite, because we gain an extra hour of weekend. (Yay!)

For either change, although it’s only an hour (what’s the big deal?), it can take days and even weeks for your body to adjust to the change.  Here are a few tips for the days leading up to and after the switch to get you back into your rhythm:

  1. Chill out on your afternoon coffee.  For those of you that need that afternoon pick-me-up, try switching to decaf for a few days. Or, try another drink entirely—like ice water with a generous squeeze of lemon.
  2. Put your phone out of sight. If you must sleep with your phone near you, try putting it on the floor next to your bed, preferably on a rug (to muffle any vibration sounds). That extra reach for your phone might keep you snoozing a bit longer . It will also minimize disturbance from the light and sounds that come from notifications.
  3. Keep the lights low. That includes tablets, TVs, and ambient lighting.  Darkness encourages melatonin production, a hormone that triggers sleepiness. Less light = more melatonin = more zzzzz’s.

Some of these may be difficult habits to break, but you should be able to manage for a few days until your body adjusts.

We're Growing! Weekends Only Furniture Store Indianapolis, Indiana

St. Louis Based Weekends Only Furniture Outlet Announces Market Expansion to Indianapolis, Indiana in May 2015

ST. LOUIS :: (October 23, 2014) :: For Immediate Release —Tom Phillips, CEO of St. Louis-based furniture store, Weekends Only Furniture Outlet announces a new location will open in the Castleton suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana in late Spring, 2015. The store will be located at 8315 Center Run Drive, in a former Burlington Coat Factory.  Construction will begin January, 2015 to prepare the 92,000 ft² space for opening.

"Opening a store outside the St. Louis market is a significant event in our 17 year history, and we are thrilled that Indianapolis will be our first,” said Tom Phillips, Chief Executive Officer, Weekends Only. “I am confident our concept will be well received in Indy, and I am even more confident in our people and our culture.  These are the real growth enablers at Weekends Only."

The intent to move out of market has been a key element to Weekends Only growth plan, and a long term focus of CEO, Tom Phillips and President, Lane Hamm.  Said Hamm, “I am ecstatic about the opportunity to open up our concept in the Indianapolis market.  It is gratifying to know our efforts will soon result in fulfilling our mission in Indianapolis to Save our Customers Money.”

It is unclear how Indianapolis customers will accept the limited Friday through Sunday “only” shopping hours and everyday low pricing strategy. Other furniture stores in the market like Kittle’s, The RoomPlace and Value City Furniture are open all week and offer a variety of sales, coupons and limited-time promotions to stimulate store traffic.  The in-store set up is also quite different. Weekends Only combines like-pieces together, eschewing the traditional store set up of merchandised “rooms” which may not appeal to customers with this shopping preference.

The company is considering a second location in Indianapolis, as well as other markets that could be serviced by the St. Louis distribution center.

Weekends Only plans to relocate key management from St. Louis to help embed the values-based culture in the new market.  The new store will create up to 40 new jobs for the area and recruiting is already underway.

Jane Roberts, VP of Merchandising shared her excitement about the announcement. “We are thrilled to be taking the next step toward achieving our vision of becoming a Top 50 Furniture retailer. We offer closeouts, brand names and a thrill of the hunt consumer shopping experience. We are passionate about saving our customers money and luckily for us, there are consumers everywhere that want to save money.”

For information about hiring for the new location, visit www.weekendsonly.com/employment, or call 314-447-1500.
